Two Things to Consider When Planning a Catering Menu for Your Event

by Miro Hanka

When planning an event or gathering, it's a no brainier that you want to feed your guests, but knowing exactly what to feed your guests can be a challenge. Should you go with a light snack, hors d'oeuvres, or should you serve a multi-course meal. Fortunately, making this decision isn't exactly rocket science, but it will require you to think about your event in greater detail. Here are a two tips to help you plan the ideal catering menu for your event.

Time Constraints

How much time you have allotted for your guests to eat should have an influence on the menu selections you have available. Take two wedding receptions, for example. The first reception is scheduled for three hours and the second reception is only an hour. The longer reception has more time, which allots for more variety in food options. With this type of time limit, you could have a multi-course dinner with soup, salad, entrees, and desserts.

However, the time constraints for the shorter reception limit what you can serve because you have limited time to serve your guests. This amount of time would be better suited for light servings or a small buffet because an hour isn't necessarily enough time to serve all your guests and allow them to eat without feeling rushed.

Planned Events

Don't forget to consider the schedule for the event when planning your catering menu. Exactly what type of events you have planned for the attendees should have a major influence on what food options you have available. Take a corporate picnic, for example. Say the primary focus of the event was team building so you have several physical courses and activities planned throughout the day.

The last thing you want to do is load everyone up on heavy foods that will slow them down and make it more difficult to participate. With this type of event, you want to go with a lighter, healthier catering menu. Deli sandwiches, fruit, and salads are all great options. On the flip side, an indoor corporate luncheon where your guests will be seated could accommodate a heavier menu.

When it comes to any event, food is often a common topic. A catering professional like Bassett Caterers can work with you to ensure you are selecting menu options that will be the most complementary to your event. Make sure you are taking your time to plan your next event menu with these considerations in mind.
